Abstract:

The South Florida Regional System Model (SFRSM) represents the next generation regional models for managing water resources in South Florida. The model consists of two main components; the Hydrologic Simulation Engine (HSE) and the Management Simulation Engine (MSE). HSE represents a stand-alone 2-dimensional hydrologic model capable of simulating lateral flow (surface and subsurface), vertical redistribution of moisture due to evapotranspiration and storage in the unsaturated zone, as well as 1-dimensional flow in branching canal network. The model is currently being applied to simulate flow in a number of sites in South Florida. Such applications are performed in support of the Comprehensive Everglade Restoration Project, Water Supply Plans, and Operational Planning.

In the present work, HSE's capabilities are extended to simulate fate and transport of dissolved constituents. The advection-dispersion equations for transport in both the surface and the subsurface are solved using the finite volume method over the same unstructured mesh used for flow. Some physical and chemical processes affecting the transport of the constituents are also incorporated in the formulation as sources/sinks. The new development utilizes the unique Object Oriented Design of HSE, which allows the transformation of the mathematical formulation into classes and objects. This paper discusses the mathematical formulation and the Object Oriented implementation, which is specific for the fate and transport of dissolved constituent. This paper is intended as a blueprint for the fate and transport module, which is designated as the Transport Simulation Engine (TSE).
