BEYOND BACTERIA: SOME PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR VIRUS AND VIRUS RELATED INDICATORS OF WATER QUALITY
Abstract:For over a century, the search for a reliable indicator of water's risk to human health from contamination by microbes has progressed slowly. New techniques developed in the biological sciences offer possibilities for more accurate and specific indicators. At the same time, the new promise also comes with practical challenges that need to be addressed if the new techniques and indicators are to move from the research laboratory to routine monitoring. This paper examines some of the practical considerations that attend these new techniques. The work was supported in part by a grant from the U.S. EPA.
