This study evaluated the effect of catch basin cleaning on stormwater quality. During eleven rain events, stormwater was sampled downstream of four residential drainage areas and tested for pollutant concentrations. Catch basins within two of the four drainage areas were cleaned at the beginning of the study, while those within the other two areas were not cleaned. Pollutant concentrations and runoff loadings were compared between the areas where catch basins had been cleaned and where the catch basins had not been cleaned. The sediment removed from the cleaned catch basins was also analyzed for pollutants and grain size distribution.

It was observed that fine particle deposits remaining in catch basins after cleaning can cause higher pollutant concentrations and loadings from cleaned catch basins for several months when compared to control areas where catch basins were not cleaned. When catch basin cleaning is performed for water quality purposes, more rigorous cleaning should be performed to remove all fine particle deposits.
