DNA Sequencing Techniques are Used to Optimize BNP Process Design
Biological nitrogen removal, in theory, has been described based on the activity of two microorganisms operating in pure culture: Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter. The actual composition of microorganisms in activated sludge process is quite different. The actual composition of nitrifying and denitrifying organisms may also vary from wastewater to another due to differences in wastewater character and other factors. Researchers working on the Nitrogen Removal Applied Research Program in New York City quickly realized that a specific understanding of the actual microbial composition in the aeration tank mixed liquor was needed before effective process optimization work could be conducted.
