BARUERI WWTP, OPTIMIZATION DEMONSTRATION PROJECT IN SAO PAULO, BRAZIL
In 1998, the Government of Canada, through Environment Canada, entered into a Co-operative Agreement with the State of São Paulo, Brazil, to improve the environmental management of the Tieté River Watershed. This watershed encompasses the Metropolitan São Paulo area, an urban conglomeration of more than 17 million people, along with a large number of manufacturing and chemical industries. Within the State, most water supply and wastewater activities are handled by SABESP, an operating company in which the State Government is the majority shareholder.
