Abstract:

Leaking wastewater infrastructure remains a large, unquantified and virtually invisible threat to the integrity of ground and surface waters in America. Both sanitary and industrial sewers are potential sources of such leaks, which can remain undetected for years. The cost of the associated clean up and collection system repair is typically prohibitive, with no offsetting revenue stream. Moreover, the extent of system decay is only truly realized after the problem reveals itself.
