A BROILER PLANT'S UNIQUE LAND APPLICATION SYSTEM
Abstract:A unique wastewater treatment system has been operating at a Gold Kist, Inc. poultry processing plant located in northwest Alabama. This system includes an activated sludge treatment system coupled with a large land application spray system. This system is used to treat approximately 2.0 MGD of wastewater from poultry processing operations at the facility. This Facility has operated more than nine years without a single violation, and it is considered to be a true asset to the community and the natural environment in the area.
Hay, cattle and timber production operations are preformed in conjunction with wastewater treatment operations, all of which add to the Facility's bottom line. These operations fully complement each other and also provide significant protection of sensitive surface water and ground water resources in the area. These systems also provide a habitat for wildlife. This Facility has been a two-time winner of the Alabama Water Environment Association's “Excellence in Industrial Wastewater Treatment Award” as well as the 2001 national recipient of the US Poultry & Egg Association's (USPEA's) Clean Water Award, Full Treatment System Category.
