In general, piggery wastewater has some trouble in conventional biological treatment because it includes high concentrations of nitrogen and organics. It is difficult to maintain the constant effluent quality in activated sludge process, since the fraction of organic solids and non-biodegradable organics are high. Additionally, nitrification was frequently inhibited by high concentration of ammonia and high pH in piggery wastewater. The widely knowned inhibition of nitrification is caused by free ammonia. To overcome these problems, higher concentration of biomass has been needed for piggery wastewater treatment. In the case of membrane bioreactor (MBR), high biomass concentration can be easily achieved since biomass is completely separated from effluent by membrane. Thus, MBR can be applied to treat wastewater containing high concentration of nitrogen.
