Since it began operations in 1981, the PhoStrip process has consistently met its effluent P discharge limit. However, filamentous foaming in the aeration tanks and anaerobic digesters has been a persistent problem. To combat this nuisance, a hybrid operational scheme was developed by coupling features of the existing PhoStrip process and more conventional biological phosphorus removal (BPR) processes. This Coupled BPR process included an anaerobic selector at the front end of the aeration tank, in addition to the rest of the PhoStrip process. Process modeling was used to fine-tune selected operational parameters. Full-scale testing of the process was conducted between March and December 2000. Results from the full-scale tests have been very promising. Specifically, a) the foaming problem has been brought under control; b) there has been no adverse impact on P-removal performance; c) internal recycle flows have been reduced; and d) lime usage in the PhoStrip process has been reduced.
