Abstract:

The City of Sanibel is located on Sanibel Island which is off the coast of southwest Lee County, Florida. Sanibel Island comprises approximately 11,600 acres, of which 5,000 acres belong to the J. N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Refuge with an additional 1,700 acres of open refuges and conservation areas. Of the remaining acreage, 4,300 acres consist of existing or approved future development of single-family and multi-family residential properties, commercial establishments, and other various land uses. Approximately 600 acres remain as vacant or undeveloped lands. Figure 1 illustrates the general vicinity of Sanibel Island.
