PUBLIC HEALTH AND LEGAL ISSUES
Abstract:The beneficial use of biosolids has raised several public health concerns. The principal issues are:
Pathogens and pathogenic substances
Nitrogen and phosphorus contamination of water resources
While it must be acknow ledged that concerns about biosolids programs are at times used as an unjustified means to shut down biosolids programs, it must also be recognized that on-going research to further our understanding of health issues is an important part of biosolids programs. Thorough research efforts are the best way to address the various public health concerns and combat legal actions that have shut down biosolids programs across the Country.
