A full-scale two-stage anaerobic hybrid system has been treating raw wastewater from the Eastman polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) production plant in Kuantan, Malaysia, since September 1999. The process includes two identical 8740 gallon (33 m3) hybrid reactors that operate in series, with the effluent of the ‘lead’ reactor serving as the influent to the ‘lag’ reactor. The lead and lag reactors change designation once every two weeks, and flow direction in the system changes.

The hybrid system averaged 85 percent total COD removal during the first eight months of operation after start-up while the system was still immature and treating design loading conditions. Under lower loading conditions, the COD removal efficiency increased to average 88 percent over the last ten months.
