Abstract:

Membrane use in wastewater recycling projects is becoming increasingly popular. In particular, reverse osmosis (RO) processes are being used to reduce total dissolved solids (TDS) and other contaminants to produce low TDS water suitable for a variety of uses. However, RO processes concentrate dissolved species into a brine stream that requires management. One residuals management concern with RO brines is the increase in metals concentrations that may exceed the wastewater treatment plant's National Pollution Discharge Elimination Standards (NPDES) limits. This paper evaluates two alternative approaches (precipitative chelants and precipitative softening) for removing selected metals from RO brines, using the results of an analysis performed for the South Bay Recycling Program in Northern California.
