The final clarifiers at WASA's 370 mgd Blue Plains Wastewater Treatment Plant are in the process of being renovated and upgraded. As part of this project, the clarifiers are being optimized with respect to inlet design, the addition of intra-basin baffling, and sludge withdrawal. A 3-step procedure involving detailed hydraulic analysis (i.e., CFD analysis) and field data collection was used to develop and test design upgrades. This balanced approach to facilities upgrade produced a detailed understanding of process hydraulics, and enabled the design of modifications uniquely suited for the final clarifiers at the Blue Plains Wastewater Treatment Plant.
