A NEW METHOD FOR EVALUATING PRIMARY CLARIFIERS
A new method has been developed for evaluating primary clarifiers that examines the individual effect of concentration of non-settleable solids, detention time, clarifier depth, sludge blanket depth, and design features of the clarifier on removal efficiency. This method was successfully used to determine priorities for clarifier improvements at the San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant (SJ/SC WPCP). Maintaining the sludge blanket level within a narrow range (1.5-1.7 m (5—5.5 ft)) was found to be the most cost-effective method for increasing removal efficiency.
