Abstract:

Sustained simultaneous air and water backwash has been used in granular media filters for many years to increase cleaning efficiency, reduce backwash ancillary components, simplify backwash operation and allow for a wider selection of media sizes. The objectives of the research described in this paper were to develop a lower profile baffle system to retain granular media during sustained simultaneous air and water backwash. A successful design was accomplished and has the same benefits as before while allowing a reduction in filter cell depth, savings in backwash waste water and reduced installation cost. Benefits apply to new construction along with retrofit applications.
