Abstract:

Ozone has strong disinfection power. However, it might produce toxic byproducts such as aldehydes and bromate ion. This study investigates inactivation effects and byproducts formation by ozone disinfection when ozone was applied to wastewater disinfection. There were few problems with residual ozone, ozonation byproducts and its toxicity, even if the inactivation level was as high as -4 log to -5 log coliform group survival ratio. However, byproducts concentration increased and toxicity became higher, when sea water was added. The presence of bromide ion is the key facter for ozone disinfection to cause byproducts formation and toxicity.
