Abstract:

Western Carolina Regional Sewer Authority (WCRSA) is completing construction of the largest sewer project in South Carolina to reduce sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) and to protect water quality. The 45 million Reedy River and Brushy Creek trunk sewer systems are designed to convey a 2-year storm event flow of 160 million gallons per day (mgd) and include 10 miles of deep trunk sewer up to 96 inches in diameter (weighing up to 13.5 tons per 8-foot section). Building these massive facilities 20 to 45 feet deep along the fully developed Reedy River valley required innovative construction methods and meticulous restoration to protect water quality and achieve public partnerships. Construction constraints included installing the trunk sewer under Interstate 85, through the Greenville Country Club golf course, through an abandoned landfill, under residential backyards, through church property, near large trees, through a horse stable, along the City Zoo, and into Cleveland Park. By forging partnerships with affected property owners and the general public during the design and construction phases, WCRSA was successful in mitigating public issues early and minimizing potential construction delays.
