Abstract:The validation phase of the development of a watershed management decision support system (WMDSS) was accomplished through analysis of the surface water quality of the South Nation River basin in Eastern Ontario. Analysis involved production of a physical analog of the river system and generation of a series of QUAL2E water quality simulation input files. Generated input files were run and results were imported back into WMDSS for review. The scenario analysed was the same as had been used on an earlier study done on the basin such that results could be compared and conclusions drawn as to the performance of the WMDSS. The comparison identified shortcomings in the more rudimentary analysis previously performed and highlighted the need for an integrated management environment with access to a suite of physical modelling tools such that the strengths of one model can overcome the weaknesses of another.
