Abstract:

The watershed assessment approach developed by the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB) is being applied to the City of Lafayette watershed located in western Oregon. During the past 5 (five) years, the City has experienced unprecedented growth which has increased demands for water quantity. The City draws its water from several wells and springs located within the watershed. Seeking to enhance groundwater storage capability and identify and enhance other beneficial uses and natural conditions of the watershed, the City has undertaken a watershed assessment with the ultimate goal of using the findings from that assessment to develop a watershed management plan (Plan). The uniqueness of the City's approach is in its success at bringing together diverse opinions through a group of volunteers: citizens, technical experts, business professionals, and politicians to prepare the Plan. The Plan will provide the City with short-term and long-term goals and action items designed to protect, restore and enhance the functions of the watershed, and address the diverse sets of values within the community.
