Together, the Project Working Committee, the City and their consultant team collaborated to develop a long term CSO Control Strategy that will mitigate the environmental impacts of Edmonton's combined sewer system. The comprehensive, 16 year, 150 million Strategy strikes a balance with stakeholders by providing significant environmental benefit while being flexible, cost-effective and affordable.
Comprised of eleven Edmontonians, each representing a different stakeholder interest group, the Project Working Committee brought forth a range of perspectives to the Strategy development process. The Committee undertook a significant learning process to enable them to provide informed feedback. They worked to identify their goals for CSO control and evaluation criteria for control options. They reviewed and provided feedback on a variety of alternative control plans and influenced the development of a two-phase approach to implementation.The City of Edmonton is now pursuing the first phase of activities (the 150 million Strategy) and has committed to a comprehensive control plan review to be conducted near the completion of that work to review the merits of proceeding with further CSO controls or make modifications. The City is currently pursuing City Council and Alberta Environment to obtain their approval of the Strategy, and is hopeful that the involvement and strong level of support provided by the Project Working Committee and others will help to obtain a positive outcome in the approval process.", pages = "556-564", url = "http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/wef/wefproc/2000/00002000/00000004/art00039", doi = "doi:10.2175/193864700785140584" }
