Abstract:

A new sensory measurement method for odor emitted from wastewater based on the triangle odor bag method (TOBM) was proposed. In this method, odor index (logarithm of odor concentration, multiplied by ten) of the headspace gas in an equilibrium state with the sample liquid is measured by the TOBM. Three experiments were conducted to compare the TOBM with the triangle odor flask method (TOFM), which is the most popular sensory measurement method for odor emitted from wastewater in Japan. In the first experiment, odor index of the sample liquid was measured by these two methods. There was a statistically significant difference between these two methods, and odor index measured by the TOBM was higher than those measured by the TOFM. The second experiment was designed to examine the effectiveness of the improved TOFM in which odor is to be sniffed through a Teflon cap attached to the mouth of a flask. The effectiveness of the improved TOFM was ascertained from interviews on the measurement procedure with the subjects. In the third experiment, odor index of real wastewater was measured by the TOBM and the improved TOFM. A statistically significant difference between these two methods was found, and odor index measured by the TOBM was higher than those measured by the improved TOFM. As a result, the applicability of the TOBM to the sensory measurement of odor emitted from wastewater was made clear.
