Mixed-Oxidant Applications in Wastewater

For safety reasons, the Sanitary Waste System Consolidation (SWSC) wastewater treatment plant at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Technical Area 46, considered alternatives to chlorine gas for final disinfection and selected, for trial purposes, on-site mixed-oxidant technology. After a trial period during which performance tests were conducted and evaluated, the SWSC plant used the mixed-oxidant technology in full operations beginning in March 1997. Benefits of the technology determined in the trials and full operation include improved worker and public safety, reduced operational and training costs, ease of operations, and enhanced flexibility in the application of the disinfecting mixed-oxidant solution. The technology enabled the SWSC to remove two 1-ton chlorine gas cylinders from the site. The SWSC staff evaluation concluded that the on-site mixed-oxidant system meets all the requirements of chlorine without any of the disadvantages.
