A mathematical model using a statistical approach for estimation of UV dose distributions delivered by continuous-flow UV treatment systems has been developed. The model takes into account the heterogeneity of the UV radiation field in the system and microorganism (particle) trajectories as a result of advection and dispersion transport mechanisms. Doses received by individual microorganisms were estimated by taking into account the statistical characteristics of the transport mechanisms and radiation field. A parameter, Dosen , is defined and used to assess disinfection performance. Results show that high hydraulic loading can yield narrower UV dose distributions received by microorganisms. Configuration of UV banks also plays an important role in determining disinfection efficiency. However, its effects suggest such lamp arrangement that would limit the advantages of high hydraulic loading from being achieved. The mixed contributions of these factors to dose distributions suggest that design and operation of the disinfection system should be closely integrated to achieve optimal efficiency.
