A comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS) offers an effective means of establishing methods and processes to develop a well-managed biosolids management program. Many organizations throughout the U. S. have expressed interest in using the EMS approach to develop/improve their local biosolids recycling programs, and a significant number of these organizations have already begun to follow the steps that will lead to a fully implemented EMS program for their facilities and projects. As these efforts become more and more common, it is important for those wishing to develop an EMS to recognize how essential effective communication is to the overall program--both within their organizations and with the communities that are affected by their biosolids program.
