Abstract:

The closing of the Montgomery County, MD, Site 2 composting facility in 1999 has caused some to ask whether composting is a viable long term biosolids management option. Site 2 was an efficiently operated facility that produced a quality, highly marketable product. What has not been noted is the continued success of all composting facilities, and, as discussed specifically in this paper, the success of in-vessel biosolids composting facilities. About 61 in-vessel biosolids composting facilities have been constructed since 1986 and have operated for at least a year. Nearly 85% of these facilities continue to operate, some for 15 years or more. The best success records are for the vertical reactor systems (82%) and agitated bed systems (93%). In discussions with operators of facilities operating for at least five years, long term success is attributed to experienced staff, preventive maintenance, and successful marketing.
