Abstract:
A facile method for the controllable surface polymer-grafting modification of the natural fiber keratin was developed. The initiating groups were immobilized onto horse hair by the bromoacetylation of the surface amino end-groups of the keratin fiber with bromoacetyl bromide in presence of triethylamine. Then bromoacetylated horse hair was used as initiator for the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene to form well-defined polystyrene (PS) brushes using Cu(I)Br/bpy as a catalytic system. The amount of polymer grafted onto the horse hair was 0.05 g on 1.0 g of keratin fiber. The surfaces of the PS-grafted horse hair were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Keywords: POLYSTYRENE; KERATIN FIBER; SURFACE INITIATION; ATOM TRANSFER RADICAL POLYMERIZATION; SURFACE ANALYSIS
