Gaze Control DURING the hitting phase in Tennis: a Preliminary Study
The present study is an examination of the head position in tennis during the hitting phase as revealed in recent observations of professional tennis players. The comparison of head position during the hitting phase is based on top tennis players' photos recorded whilst they performed
during competition. The photo analysis revealed that the head position during the stroke execution distinguished significantly elite players from other professional players especially after impact. Elites show a characteristic head fixation in the direction of the contact zone at impact and
during the follow-through. This finding suggests significant differences in gaze behaviour (coupled eyes and head movement) among professional players.
