Abstract:

The novel structure of a flat-top interleaver filter based on interference of polarized light is presented. It is composed of several cascaded same-configured analog birefringent modules located between a polarizer and an analyzer. The analog birefringent module is equivalent to a birefringent crystal. The equivalent birefringence arises from the difference between the refractive indexes of the two medium blocks and can be much larger than that of a traditional birefringent crystal. The dynamic characteristics, i.e. center frequency tunability and bandwidth variability, of this interleaver filter are investigated. We can easily accomplish these dynamic characteristics by adjusting the optical path difference in each analog birefringent module and obtain passband (and stopband) with wide flatness width (greater than 1/5 period) and high isolation (-30dB for 50GHz interleaver filter) simultaneously.
