Abstract: It is discussed a generally constructed mechanically compensated zoom lens in which the second and fourth components are movable to attain zooming effects while the first, third and fifth components are fixed during zooming process. Equations governing the zooming process are given by the quartic simultaneous equations with two or four unknowns. In the vicinity of an extremum point, the zoom equation approximately becomes a parabolic curve. In the neighborhood of a singular point, the zoom equation tends to two lines intersecting at the singular point. Numerical examples are added to show the effectiveness of the analysis.
