Enhancement of optical activity of chiral sculptured thin films by suitable infiltration of void regions

Abstract: Using a local homogenization approach which treats a chiral sculptured thin film (STF) as a two-phase composite material, we show here that the infiltration of the void regions with a material of higher refractive index results in the enhancement of the optical activity. If chiral STFs of a high-index infiltrant cannot be directly fabricated for some practical reason, then the scheme described here may provide an alternate route.
