J. and Butcher, Lian R.", abstract = "The principal female reproductive variates were studied in the cold-water loliginid squid Loligo gahi d'Orbigny, 1835 from Falkland Islands' waters. Ripe egg size ranged from 1.4 \texttimes 1.9 to 1.8 \texttimes 2.8 mm with average diameters on random axes of 1.662.39 mm. The egg size of autumn-winter spawners was larger than that of spring-summer spawners. Ripe egg size increases with female size in individuals from the same cohort. During maturation the initially unimodal size distribution of oocytes in the ovary becomes bimodal due to the formation of a batch of ripe eggs (54013,820 oocytes). The total yolk oocyte stock ranges from 1100 to 21,000, and potential fecundity varies from 1800 to 35,200 oocytes. Larger females have higher potential fecundity. The actual fecundity was estimated to be about 50% of the potential fecundity. The main adaptations to cold water maturation and spawning in L. gahi females are the high proportion of yolk oocytes in the ovary and a shift of the main spawning peak to spring.", }
