Sausage-shaped Artificial Collector Developed in Alaska to Study Young-of-Year Red King Crabs
A sausage-shaped artificial collector (SAC) is described that passively collects young-of-year (YOY) red king crabs (Paralithodes camtschaticus). A SAC has an outer skin of tubular plastic netting stuffed with used herring gillnet; the stuffed portion was 83 × 26 cm. Alaska Department of Fish and Game deployed 1,280 SACs in Chiniak Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska from 1989–1991 in ocean waters from 1 to 92 m deep. These collectors were attached to a groundline and fished 5 to 28 per string in a longline fashion. Of seven different artificial collectors tested, SACs were found to be the best to collect young king crabs. There were 105 glaucothoe larvae and 4,678 YOY red king crabs retrieved from 906 SACs. SACs are being used in an attempt to estimate future recruitment to the commercial fishery by indexing YOY red king crabs with adult crabs from the same cohorts. SACs also were used to define crab settling periods, range of settling depths and distribution. Growth of crabs in SACs for a year was summarized. An estimated 30,000 marine organisms from 93 taxa and 10 phyla were collected from 240 SACs. SACs may have future use in red king crab rehabilitation efforts and to increase the rate of colonization and species diversity on new artificial reefs.
