Free Content A Review of Abalone Seeding, Possible Significance and a New Seeding Device

This paper reviews some of the published experimental work regarding the release of larval, juvenile abalone “seed” in coastal waters as a means of increasing local productivity and enhancing depleted stocks of abalone. Much of this work has been done on a small scale, but indicates that planting success is variable and is affected by the condition of the abalone at release, size, planting method, habitat type, food availability and predation. The importance of juvenile seeding is discussed in light of recent evidence indicating that for some species of abalone, recruitment may be localized and should be measured in tens of meters rather than in kilometers as was previously believed. Examples of successful use of hatchery-raised juvenile abalone to enhance natural populations are cited. In light of localized recruitment such enhancement efforts may provide the only means of establishing abalone populations on a time scale meaningful to fishery managers. The design and use of a device which protects the abalone from predation immediately after transfer is presented.
