Artificial Reef Program in Balearic Waters (western Mediterranean)
Abstract:The paper describes the program of artificial reefs in Balearic Waters (Western Mediterranean) in the four major islands of the archipelago which was initiated to prevent further damage to the sea-bed and enhance its natural regeneration. The criteria for site selection are given, as well as the type of boulders, arrangement and situation. Some preliminary results are given. The relationship of the species to the boulders and their substratum, as well as the sequence of the benthic colonization is also discussed.
