Abstract:

Since 1964, specimens of the genus Architeuthis have been secured from various locales around the island of Newfoundland. The majority came from one particular area, the Bonavista Peninsula and adjacent waters of Bonavista and Trinity Bays. All but one specimen were sexually mature females, the sole male being sexually mature. Data were obtained on most of the specimens, and my purpose is to place on record the acquisition of these animals and to provide an introductory discussion to some aspects of their systematics and biology.
