Habitat Use by Juvenile Blue Crabs: A Comparison Among Habitats in Southern New Jersey

Abstract:Juvenile blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) were quantitatively collected from eelgrass (Zostera marina), adjacent unvegetated substrate, macroalgae (Ulva lactuca), adjacent unvegetated substrate, and a Spartina alterniflora marsh creek with a suction sampler from July 1986 to March 1988 in 19 day and two night sampling trials. The density of juvenile blue crabs was low (0–3⋅m–2) in all New Jersey habitats compared to densities in Chesapeake Bay or the Gulf of Mexico and there was little evidence of different nursery values among habitats. Recruitment to the estuary occurred primarily between August and November. In March (1987 and 1988) blue crab juveniles were found only in the eelgrass and marsh creek habitats suggesting that overwintering survival of juveniles may be greater in these habitats.
