N2 - We compared eight common, two-parameter, mathematical expressions of the relation between photosynthesis and photosynthetic photon flux density. The equations were compared in regard to their abilities to simulate sets of data obtained in laboratory determinations of photosynthesis
by thalli of several species of tropical marine macroalgae collected from the coral reefs of Guam (*Gracilaria salicornia, Polycavernosa tsudae, Sargassum polycistum*, and *Halimeda opuntia*). The criteria used for the comparisons included both the overall fit (fidelity) of the models
to sets of experimental data and their precision in estimating the two parameters, P_{max} and α. Based on these criteria, the most useful formulation was that in which apparent photosynthesis (in terms of oxygen evolution) is expressed as a power function of photosynthetic photon
flux density.
