Free Content Vertical Zonation of the Xanthid Mud Crabs Panopeus Obesus and Panopeus Simpsoni on Oyster Reefs

Adults of the xanthid mud crabs Panopeus obesus and Panopeus simpsoni occur in distinct zones on oyster reefs. Although the juvenile P. obesus population also occurs in a distinct zone, juvenile P. simpsoni are distributed homogeneously throughout the reef. Both adult and juvenile P. obesus are concentrated in the high intertidal zone. P. simpsoni adults are abundant only in the low intertidal. Habitat selection appears to determine vertical distribution of the adults. However, little is known about the ecology and behavior of the juveniles of these two species; therefore it is difficult to establish what factors determine their distribution.
