Abstract:

In Casco Bay, Maine, a nearly unialgal and abundant population of Skeletonema costatum persists throughout July and August. The observed concentration of Skeletonema and nitrate and the growth characteristics of Skeletonema from culture fit the chemostat equations very well. One of the equations when modified and its component parts reduced to clauses of a sentence describes the populations of coexisting species in the southern Sargasso Sea. Thus, if there is one nutrient concentration which is limited by the growth capacities of all the species, then each of these growth capacities is limiting to its own particular nutrient concentration. This is to say that the single nutrient concentration should be broken down into many by the many species, but the activities of these species are undone by mixing and molecular diffusion. Thus, no one species with a least equilibrium concentration of nutrient can get the nutrient down to this concentration and competitively exclude the others.
