Free Content Epizoic Fauna of Thalamoporella Gothica Var. Indica and Pherusella Tubulosa (Bryozoa)

Download Article:

Epizoans occurring on two bryozoans, Thalamoporella gothica var. indica and Pherusella tubulosa from the intertidal region at Visakhapatnam, Bay of Bengal, India, were collected and identified. The two bryozoans supported a rich and varied epizoic life. Striking differences in the qualitative and quantitative distribution of epizoans occurring on the two bryozoans were noticed. A large number of deposit or detritus feeders were found on Thalamoporella gothica var. indica but filter feeders, suspension feeders, and foraminiferans were dominate forms on Pherusella tubulosa. These differences appear to be dependent on the quantity of sediment retained by the bryozoans, which, in turn, depends on their morphology. It is suggested that littoral bryozoans may form a very good biotope for harboring diverse groups of organisms, the density and variety of which is comparable to the “phytal fauna” harbored by certain algae.
