Review of the Polytypic Doryrhamphine Pipefish Oostethus Brachyurus (Bleeker)
The subtropical-tropical trunk-pouch pipefish Oostethus brachyurus is considered to include four allopatric subspecies: O. b. brachyurus (Sumatra to Society Is.), O. b. millepunctatus (east Africa to Ceylon), O. b. aculeatus (west Africa) and O. b. lineatus (western Atlantic and Pacific coast of Panamá). A key, synonymies and diagnoses, together with meristic and morphometric data, are provided for all subspecies. Lectotypes for O. b. brachyurus and O. b. lineatus and a neotype for O. b. millepunctatus are selected.
