Contribution to the Biology of the Sea Catfish, Arius Spixii (Agassiz) (Pisces-Ariidae), South of Margarita Island, Venezuela
A total of 2,297 specimens of Arius spixii were sampled with different fishing gears between April 1972 and March 1973. The length-weight relationship for both sexes combined was Wt = 1.2648 × 10−5 (SL)3.0414, where Wt is the weight in grams and SL is the standard length in mm. A. spixii was found to spawn once a year between July and October. One batch of eggs was found in the gonads. The fecundity-length relationship was Fec = −28.9 + 0.2778 (SL) and the fecundity-weight relationship was Fec = 5.97 + 0.133 Wt. The von Bertalanffy growth equation estimated for the species was (SL)t = 298.6 [1 − e−0.34420(t + 0.009)].
