Abstract:The syntypic series of Aplysia willcoxi Heilprin, 1886 is reexamined. Taxonomic characters currently used to distinguish Aplysia brasiliana Rang and A. willcoxi are reviewed. Examination of collections of A. brasiliana from Texas and A. willcoxi from Florida reveal an overlap of radular characters. These characters are suggestive of a dinal variation. This evidence combined with the demonstrated reproductive compatibility of Texas and Florida specimens support the existence of a single species. Aplysia willcoxi Heilprin, 1886 is synonymized with Aplysia brasiliana Rang, 1828.
