Radiometric Determinations of Coral Growth Rates
Radiometric methods based on Ra-228, Sr-90, and Pb-210 are used to measure the rate of coral growth. The Ra-228 and Sr-90 methods give consistent results. The Pb-210 method is not ideal, but may be used in some cases to document major changes in growth rates. By quantifying the time parameter in modern coral samples, chemical changes in the reef environment may be studied for the past 30 years.
