Redescriptions and Reevaluations of the Antipatharians Described by L. F. de Pourtalès
Abstract:The general morphology of the Antipatharia (Coelenterata:Anthozoa) is reviewed, and the reliability of various taxonomic characters is evaluated. A résumé is given of earlier taxonomic studies and the general classification of the Antipatharia is reviewed.
Twelve species of antipatharians are systematically treated; these include Antipathes lenta Pourtalès, A. salix Pourtalès, A. rigida Pourtalès, A. americana Duchassaing & Michelotti, A. fernandezi Pourtalès, A. hirta Gray, A. tanacetum Pourtalès, Parantipathes tetrasticha (Pourtalès), Aphanipathes humilis (Pourtalès), A. thyoides (Pourtalès), A. tilix (Pourtalès), and A. abietina (Pourtalès). Type-specimens of species originally described by L. F. de Pourtalès are redescribed, and the affinities that these species show with each other and with other species are emphasized to suggest possible methods whereby a more natural revision of the order can be achieved.
