A Phytoplankton Study of the Amazon Region
A phytoplankton study was made of the region of the Amazon delta and profiles of distribution show a maximum at the bottom of the shallow estuary except where turbidity was very high and silt abundant. In the deeper water, the phytoplankton maximum was at between 70 and 90 meters in association with the thermocline. Species distribution shows anomalies in normally oceanic species being confined to neritic waters. There are distinct floras north and south of the Amazon canyon.
