II. Respiration in Air

The respiration rate in air of seedlings of Rhizophora mangle, R. conjugata. Brughiera gymnorhiza, Avicennia marina and A. nitida has been studied. Although initial effects, when present, had disappeared after three hours, comparisons were made at the end of five hours. There is a definite drift in the respiration rate of Rhizophora mangle seedlings with age, the rate reaching a minimal overall value with medium-sized seedlings. The base of the hypocotyl, however, retains a minimal value thereafter but the apex respiration rate rises steadily to the time when the seedling drops. For material of comparable age from medium and mature seedlings the respiration rate is higher in summer than it is in spring. This is probably associated with the increased air temperature.

Structures such as the cotyledonary body in Rhizophora and the fruit wall in Avicennia, which are probably concerned with transport of food material from parent to embryo, have a very high respiration rate. Seedlings of Avicennia, on a dry-weight basis, also have a higher respiration rate than seedlings of Rhizophora, a phenomenon which may be associated with differential development of aerenchyma.
