Notes on Bermuda Hermit Crabs (Crustacea; Anomura)
Abstract:Seven spp. of pagurids from Bermuda shallow waters are listed and discussed. The status of Calcinus verrilli (Clibanarius verrilli Rathbun) as endemic to Bermuda is confirmed. Clibanarius hebes Verrill (in part) and C. brachyops Bouvier are probably referrable to C. tricolor (Gibbes). Clibanarius antillensis Stimpson and Pagurus miamensis Provenzano are new to Bermuda. Availability of gastropod shells is probably a limiting factor in abundance of hermit crabs in this locality. The three most abundant species occupy different ecological niches.
