Abstract:
The taxonomy of the American commercial sponges is revised and four new species and one new subspecies are described, including one new species of commercial sponge, hitherto unrecognized, from the Mediterranean. The eleven species treated herein are: Spongia obliqua, Spongia barbara, Spongia barbara dura, Spongia anclotea, new species, Spongia sterea, new species, Spongia graminea, Spongia graminea tampa, new subspecies, Spongia cheiris, new species, Hippiospongia gossypina, Hippiospongia lachne, and Hippiospongia kerion, new species from the Mediterranean.
